'The Arches Project'

Due to the need to strengthen the Hamlet Court Road bridge,
these ‘under bridge’ premises were lost, as the Council had to infill them with concrete. Unfortunately, the cost of saving ‘The Arches’
would have been £500,000, as this would be the additional cost for an alternative repair scheme. The fascias were replaced with walls faced with concrete and painted various colours, with the words of a local poet spelt out in stainless steel letters. Unfortunately this has not endured well.

As part of the Re-Generation plan for the area created by SWCG's sister organisation: The Conservation Association of Westcliff Seaboard (CAWS), we are currently investigating, with the support of Milton Ward Community Group, whether we can create a series of painted shopfronts, such as those created in the City of Lyons in France. These would, we believe be very special and encourage tourism and business to the area.
