| South Westcliff Community Group | | The Story So Far | | | The South Westcliff Community Group (SWCG) started out in July 2002 as the Pembury Road Action Group, formed to prevent the illegal use of the Redstone Hotel as a hostel for 20+ young male offenders.
We are not 'Nimby's, but the placement of such a large number of young males in any area is neither good for them, or good for the community. We believe in 'care in the community' for all people, but on a human scale. Whilst we created the public uproar, we must acknowledge the help given to us particularly by Councillor Richard Brown in this matter. Having advertised the first meeting, we were stunned to have around 80-100 people turn up and request that we work on a wider area. The people who came all lived in the roads south of the railway lines from First Avenue, up to The Cliff's Pavilion, so we re-named the group and now actively cover this area, which we also call 'Westcliff Seaboard'. Successes in the few years we have been operating, include Zebra crossings, a tree planting programme, support for Hamlet Court Road Re-generation and significant participation in Council plans for our area. We continue to work hard to fight the rubbish problem and have successfully applied new anti-social laws in the area.
Our four development programmes are active and effective. | | | |
